Do I need a website if I already have a Facebook page?
Not always. Many Malaysian shops do well with a Facebook page, a free Google Business Profile and WhatsApp. A website is worth adding when customers search Google for what you sell, when you want one place for your menu, prices and orders, or when you want an address you own. Here is how the three compare.
Facebook page, Google Business Profile and website compared
| Facebook page | Google Business Profile | Your own website | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free (Google) | Paid (see website prices) |
| Who sets the rules | Meta | You | |
| Shows your shop on Google Maps | No | Yes | No; your profile links to it |
| Full menu, price list or catalogue | In posts and sections | Products and services sections | Yes, laid out as you want |
| Orders or bookings sent to WhatsApp | Through a button | Through a button or link | Yes, with the details filled in |
| An address in your own name (.com) | No | No | Yes |
| Several languages on one page | Posts in each language | One profile | Yes, BM, English and Chinese |
Start with the free Google Business Profile
Google says: “Yes, creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free.” It is what puts your shop on Google Maps with your hours, phone number, photos and reviews. If you do not have one yet, do this first; a website does not replace it.
Working from home or at customers' homes (aircond service, catering, home bakery)? Google's help page says to select that you are a service area business, and: “If your business doesn't have a storefront where you receive customers, you must hide your business address.”
When a website is worth it
- Customers search Google for what you sell, not just your name (“aircond service Shah Alam”, “kek tempahan Bangi”). A page about your services can be found for those words; a Facebook page has little room for them.
- You answer the same questions every day: price, menu, area, how to order. A site answers once, with a WhatsApp button that sends the order with the details filled in.
- You want an address you own. A .com in your name stays yours, whatever happens to a platform or an account.
- Not every customer uses Facebook. DataReportal put Facebook's ad reach in Malaysia at 63.7% of the population at the end of 2025 (ad reach, not a count of users), against 98.0% of people using the internet (35.4 million).
- You serve customers in more than one language, and want BM, English and Chinese on one page.
When you do not need one yet
- Your customers already find you on Google Maps and order on WhatsApp, and the questions are few.
- You sell mostly to regulars who follow your Facebook or Instagram.
- You would not keep prices and opening hours up to date. An out-of-date site costs trust.
In that case, complete your Google Business Profile, add photos and your hours, and come back to a website later.
How the three work together
- Google Business Profile: the listing on Maps, with your website in the website field.
- Website: the menu, prices, area and the WhatsApp button, in your languages.
- Facebook and Instagram: news, photos and offers, with the website link in the bio.
- WhatsApp: where every order and booking arrives.

Questions
Can my Facebook page be my website?
It can be your main page online, and for some shops that is enough. It does not give you an address you own or a place on Google Maps; a Google Business Profile does the second, for free.
Is a Google Business Profile really free?
Yes. Google's own page for Malaysia says creating a Business Profile and listing your business on Google is free.
How do I get my shop on Google Maps?
Create a Business Profile on Google, add your category, hours, phone and photos, and verify it. If customers do not come to your premises, choose service area business and hide your address, as Google's help page says.
Will a website bring me more customers?
We cannot promise that, and nobody honest can. A website makes you easier to find and easier to order from; whether people buy is up to the shop.
